लगभग 10,000 वर्ष पूर्व नवपाषाण क्रांति (Neolithic Revolution) के साथ मेहरगढ़, मिस्र और सुमेर में कृषि का विकास हुआ। 20वीं शताब्दी में हैबर-बॉश विधि से अमोनियम नाइट्रेट का निर्माण, यांत्रीकरण, और 'हरित क्रांति' (Green Revolution) ने गेहूँ, चावल और मक्के की उच्च पैदावार वाली किस्मों से वैश्विक खाद्य संकट को दूर किया।
